Client Success: Friday's Seafood & Market

Roy and Friday Hawkins first came to the SBDC in September of 2012 with the idea of opening a seafood market and restaurant.  Roy is retired military and his wife, Friday, had always dreamed of opening her own restaurant.  Their target date to open was early 2013.

Steve Surguy, McLennan SBDC Director, worked with Roy and Friday to develop a business plan and to evaluate viability of the proposed location. Although initially planning to apply for an SBA loan to fund the project, they ultimately decided to fund the opening themselves.  The combination restaurant/seafood market/convenience store successfully opened in May 2013.

Since that time, business continues to grow at a steady pace and they are currently planning an expansion of the restaurant.  They have recently added Texas Lottery to their offerings and will celebrate one year in business with a “Louisiana Crawfish Boil” May 17th, 2014.  Roy and Friday had the following to say about dealing with the SBDC.

The information that the SBDC provided gave us a direction to follow and increased our chances for success.  The market analysis, business model suggestions and cash flow predictions were all good tools to trigger our thinking on how to put our store together.  Although we had some background in Business Management and Accounting, your office helped us define our goals and determine if an SBA loan was needed to assist us.  I am glad to say although we didn't need to use the SBA loan, it did help us make alliances helpful to other parts of our Business.  Currently, our business is operating in the black and sales are up this year by 10% and growing, with three part-time employees.  We also intend to annually have the Crawfish Festival at our location on May 17th 2014 with live Music, the Texas Lottery and Car Show, 11:30 AM till 5:30 PM, this year and every year thereafter the weekend after Mother’s Day.
